With over 330 million active users, Twitter is not just a popular form of social media — it changes the way people write in this digital age.

Since Twitter only allows 280 characters per tweet, users must be concise in their writing approach. Tweets are generally so concise that only one-percent of tweets actually reach the character limit.

Some users have such large followings, that individual tweets can receive millions of likes. When actor, Chadwick Boseman — most well-known for his portrayal of T’Challa in Black Panther — died in August of last year after a long battle with colon cancer, the tweet posted on his account confirming his death and commemorating his life received over 7.5 million likes — a record that stands today.

On the day of his inauguration, President Joe Biden posted a tweet that received 4.2 million likes — the second most liked tweet. The tweet simply reads, “It’s a new day in America.” Former President, Barack Obama, also received 4.2 million likes when he tweeted, “No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin or his background or his religion.”

The K-Pop group, BTS, has become a massive global sensation over the past few years, and holds seventeen of the top thirty most liked posts on Twitter.

With digital media growing every moment of every day, it seems inevitable that the way people communicate in writing is going to continue changing for better or for worse. Tweets, like the ones above, are already combining text with pictures and videos. Since Twitter has already established itself as a force of change with regard to writing, the criteria for what makes written communication is bound to change.
